G. Thomas Williams

Attorney, McGarry Bair

G. Thomas (“G-Tom”) Williams is a full-time intellectual property attorney with the local law firm of McGarry Bair PC and part-time weekend warrior coder. G-Tom has been involved in hundreds of transactions before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Copyright Office. He also has a thriving litigation practice and has been involved in a number of motions, hearings, and trials around the country since he graduated from the George Washington University Law School in 1995. He also holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1992 (he toyed around with the idea of a double major in Computer Science, but ended up applying to law school instead, so don’t judge him).

G-Tom has also coded in a number of languages since he started at the young age of 8 when his father, as early pioneer in coding in West Michigan, built a kit home computer in 1978, including BASIC, FORTRAN, Pascal, C++, C#, as well as working on a number of websites (most recently in Reactjs and Node/Express back ends) and has two apps up on the Apple and Google Play app stores. Truth be told, he has a penchant for pushing untested code to main branches, so beware.

A Journey Through Coding And The Law

G-Tom will talk about his journey through life as a hobbyist coder, which took him through law school and into the present day, while touching on various intellectual property legal issues over the years that may provide some insight into the future legal issues coming down the road with AI. Or maybe not, since the courts are also pushing untested code into the wild these days.
